In Focus: 10 Tips for Spring Semester Success

For this episode, the Educational Technology team reached out to members of the faculty and administration to gather 10 tips that will help faculty to have a great start to the Spring semester. So, let’s get started!  


#10  - Syllabus & Course Preparation Checklist

The folks at FSCJ Online have prepared a comprehensive checklist to help you make sure that you’re able to stay on top of all of the tasks that need to be completed before the start of the Spring semester.

#9  –  Requesting Course Access

While you are preparing your course content, you may need access to a prior semester’s course for content copy. To request access to a course taught prior to Fall 2017, email EdTech@fscj.edu or submit a ticket via help.fscj.edu.


#8 – Course Availability

The PeopleSoft integration has changed the way that course shells are created within Blackboard. There are a few crucial points that you need to be aware of. 

Each course is shell is created and made available to the instructor 60 days prior to its start date. This means that A session, B session, and C session course are created at different times.

The instructor then decides when they would like the course to be available to students, and has the responsibility of closing it at the end of the semester. This can be done by either setting a date range for the course to be available, or by setting it to be continuously open. The instructor must then remember to close it manually at the end of the term.

#7 – Know the Important Term Dates

There are important dates that occur throughout the semester like grading windows and drop for non-attendance. These dates are communicated during the term via email from Academic Operations and are available on the fscj.edu site, and can be accessed here.


#6—How to Access the Grading Roster

During the Fall semester, many instructors had difficulty accessing the grade rosters with myFSCJ. 

To access the grade roster, users must navigate to the Faculty tab and click the ‘person’ icon. This is the best way to access the grade roster! Although there are other ways to obtain similar content, they don’t provide the full functionality of allowing you to enter grades.


#5 – Course Evaluations & Survey Results

There’s a new process for Course Evaluations. 

During the last portion of the semester, students have the opportunity to evaluate their courses. This process opens on the Friday before the last week of the class within the Student tab of myFSCJ. The evaluation reports will be made available to instructors and administrators five days after the last day of class.

#4 - Using Kaltura MediaSpace

You may have noticed that the Kaltura Mash-up button is no longer in Blackboard! To access MediaSpace to upload, edit, or curate videos, in the short term, you must use the link that it still located in the Artemis portal under the Technology tab. From there, you can acquire an embed code located in the bottom right-hand corner of the video that can be added to the Blackboard video function to link to your content.


#3 – Finding Information & Answers

With so many new processes and information to keep up with, there are a few spots we recommend that faculty view regularly in order to stay updated. 

The Academic Technology Blog is managed by the Educational Technology team, and contains information about system updates, articles about new technology, apps, and more. It also contains a student section with information that you may want to pass along in your classroom. 

The Blackboard home page is being redesigned to include faculty updates with relevant content, software keys, and important announcements.


#2 Report Issues So They Can Be Reviewed

Check your Blackboard course shells as soon as they’re available and report any questions or concerns through the help desk. The sooner we locate any problems, the easier it will be to fix them. Even if you’re unsure if something is a problem, let us know and we can do the research for you.


#1 – You Have Help!

So, what’s number one? You! Being there when you need us is a top priority for all of us!

There are lots of resources available to assist instructors so you can keep your focus on your students and the classroom. 

Help.fscj.edu is the Information Technology Help Desk site where users can search the Knowledge Base for answers to common issues, submit a ticket that will be routed to the department that can assist, call and speak to a representative, or email in an issue to service.desk.@fscj.edu.

Dedicated Faculty Development Specialists are available on campuses for in-person assistance with Professional Development, Blackboard, myFSCJ, video and photography needs, design work, and much more. Discover more about the Faculty Resource Centers.

Training.fscj.edu is the newly redesigned site by the Training and Organizational Development team where professional development and training content can all be found.

And Faculty members can always contact the Faculty Senate, the Faculty Union, or the Academic Technology Committee to report issues that may need additional review or evaluation.

New Blackboard Apps!

We are happy to announce that Blackboard has released a suite of new, improved mobile apps and that they are now compatible with myFSCJ for Fall 2017 and beyond! Blackboard has split the functionality of the apps to create one that is specifically tailored towards the needs of students and one that is perfect for instructor use! 

Blackboard App (for Students)

The Blackboard App is the current name for the student-centered version of Blackboard mobile. It replaces the current Blackboard student app, which has been discontinued.

It is available in the iOS App Store, in Google Play, and in the Windows Store. 

Like the previous version of the Blackboard mobile app, students can still take tests, view announcements, post discussions, and review grades with Blackboard App. Now, the app is optimized for mobile, so that the content will adapt to all screen sizes and be more visible and accessible! Users can also upload assignments and attachments from Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive, making it easier than ever to work on the go using just your mobile device. The new homepage for the app also features an activity stream, displaying due dates, posted grades, and assignment uploads for all classes in one continuous, integrated flow. Collaborate is also now fully integrated into the mobile experience, so students do not need to use another app or their browser to join learning sessions on their phone or tablet. 

The Blackboard app will be continuously updated, with the intent of making it easier and more efficient for students to complete online coursework wherever they are. For more information, visit Blackboard's help site.

Blackboard Instructor

The Blackboard Instructor app is brand new, and only shows the courses that are being taught, not those that the user is enrolled in. Instructors can use the app to view and send announcements or make courses available for viewing by students. The app is fully responsive and mimics the content layouts and file structure of a Blackboard course within the full LMS. This structure can also be edited or changed from the mobile app.

The app contains a student viewer that can help faculty to better understand the student mobile experience while taking tests, watching videos, and reading content. The app will also allow the user to export content for use in other mobile apps or in a web browser. It also incorporates Collaborate access natively, so that sessions can be run completely from the mobile app without relying on a browser or separate plug-in. To access your online courses on the Blackboard Mobile app, please follow the directions listed below:

1. Ensure you have the correct app downloaded onto your smart-device. The Blackboard Mobile app’s icon should appear as a blue square with a pencil. (Note: The Blackboard Learn app, which looks like a chalkboard, is not compatible with myFSCJ, so if you only have that app on your device, please download the correct Blackboard Mobile app).

2. Upon opening the app, you will be prompted to enter your college. Type in “Florida State College at Jacksonville”.

3. You will be presented with a prompt telling you to “Web Login”. Click the “Web Login” button.

4. You will be redirected to the myFSCJ login page. Please login using your myFSCJ userID and password.

5. Locate and click the Blackboard link underneath the “Useful Links” section of the student tab. For instructors, locate the Blackboard link within the faculty tab.

6. This will certify your session and take you back to the Blackboard Mobile app interface.

In Focus LIVE: Academic Reorganization Discussion

During the first week of May, Dr. Bioteau released a President’s Message that described in broad strokes some of the changes that will be made in Academic Affairs for the 2017-2018 year. Dr. Wall asked to utilize the In Focus platform to present a more detailed account of this new organizational structure and to provide an opportunity for faculty and staff to ask questions directly. There was a specific focus on those in Academic Affairs areas. Above, you can view a recording of this live-streamed conversation between Dr. Wall and Assistant Director of Academic Technology Brandi Bleak. 

Viewers of the livestream can follow along with Dr. Wall's PowerPoint below. Towards the end of the segment, Dr. Wall promised to answer all questions that were not covered prior to the end of the stream in this space. At this time of year, we all struggle to make it the last fifteen percent of the semester because we just want to think about the summertime! The drawback of this magical feeling of euphoria is that it is also finals time: the most important part of the term! For April's In Focus: Student Edition, Brandi and Robyn took a look at some apps to help you stay on track during these final days so that you can master your final exams. Then, we switched gears to look at ways that you can make the most of your summer!

In Focus LIVE: New MediaSpace Tools!

On March 31, the Academic Technology Department hosted an episode of In Focus LIVE that showcased some of the new, easy to use features of MediaSpace, FSCJ's video platform! While you may have used MediaSpace to watch videos, store media, or integrate into your Blackboard courses, a recent update has also given faculty and staff the opportunity to create video quizzes and to do simple screen and lecture capture. MediaSpace expert Michael Smith joined Brandi and Robyn to share best practices for using these new tools within and outside of Blackboard. If you are interested in becoming a MediaSpace expert, sign up for Kaltura University, Kaltura's free and comprehensive training program! Kaltura University provides a great overview of how to make, store, and manage videos, with details about chaptering and organizing content.  


How to Use MediaSpace and Upload Videos

Become a MediaSpace power user! This video will show you how it works, and how you can use it to find and view video content at FSCJ. It will also give you a look at how to upload a video from your computer to MediaSpace and how your videos can be organized into playlists and channels. 


Using the CaptureSpace Recorder

CaptureSpace is an exciting new tool that is available for FREE for all FSCJ faculty and staff. It can be used to do screen, voice, and camera recordings with up to three inputs. This video will give a brief overview of how to record videos using CaptureSpace, and will explain how to complete post-production tasks like chaptering and indexing. finally, it provides a look at the flexible media player that is one of the unique features of screencasts that are completed using CaptureSpace. 


 

Post-production Video Tips

This short video will give the novice creator of educational content some tips for how to make videos look more professional. Many of the suggestions provided, including trimming, adding a title, and adding credits, can be done with the touch of a button within MediaSpace.

Others, like captioning for accessibility, are equally important for educational content, but must be done outside of the MediaSpace platform. More information about captioning can be found at the bottom of this blog post. 


 

Adding Video Quizzes

Video quizzes are the newest and most exciting educational feature to be added to the MediaSpace platform. Video quizzes can be created with any video that has been uploaded to the system, and provide a wide range of flexibility in terms of the types of questions that can be asked and their placement within the video. Using the easy techniques that are integrated into MediaSpace, you can create professional looking video assessments that can measure student engagement with media content, as well as concept retention. 


 

Gathering Data from Video Quizzes

Once you have created a video quiz, learn how to use a variety of different tools to gather data about your students' performance. Reports can be viewed within Kaltura, can be exported into Excel, and can be directly sent to the Blackboard gradebook.

Video quizzes can be integrated into Blackboard, to be used for course assessment, as well as being used to track which students are watching required course media.


Tips for using Video for Teaching and Learning

Are you new to creating videos for educational purposes? Learn from the wisdom of MediaSpace users and video professionals from around the country who are interviewed in this video and provide simple tips that you can incorporate into your work. Remember: in making educational videos content, not technology, is king! Make sure that you are using the tool of video to deliver the information that you want your students to learn.

Blackboard Collaborate

Blackboard Collaborate is a web conferencing tool that is used by professors to connect with students. As a student, you can use Blackboard Collaborate to meet with your peers for a group project, attend a webinar, or share and work on documents. There are also tools to share your screen, review a PowerPoint presentation, and write on a digital whiteboard. Blackboard Collaborate can be accessed in courses, if your professor has enabled the Tool. Please ask your professor if it is not visible within the course’s menu on the lefthand side of the course shell.

Microsoft OneNote

OneNote is a virtual notebook tool that can be used to store photos, documents, links, and audio memos. Notebooks are stored in the cloud, update automatically, and can be shared. There is also a mobile app for OneNote that allows you to take photos, videos, and record audio files. OneNote is Included in Office 365 Suite and is FREE for all FSCJ faculty, staff and students.

Dropbox (and Paper)

Dropbox is a tool that allows you to store and share digital files with others. The basic version of Dropbox is free and gives you 2GB of space to use. You can write, comment, and embed media in Dropbox and access those Documents from anywhere, even a smart phone!

Google Drive / Docs / Hangouts

Google Drive is a FREE cloud storage service that provides 15GB of space for its users. It accepts all file types and allows for collaboration and sharing with others. Google Drive integrates with the Google Productivity Suite, which includes these free, cloud-based apps: Google Docs, a word processor, Google Sheets, a spreadsheet program, and Google Slides, a presentation program. These are very similar to the Office365 Tool Suite. 

Google also provides a great communication and conferencing tool, Hangouts. It  allows users to text, make FREE calls, or video chat. The video function uses your computer's webcam, but also has screen sharing capabilities, so that you can show someone else what you are working on. You can use it to communicate one-on-one or in a group. It can also be used anywhere, via the Mobile Hangouts app, which is available for iPhones, IOS, and android devices.

On Friday, January 27th at 10:00 AM, the Academic Technology Team live streamed the latest episode of our In Focus series, which took a deeper look at Information Technology Services' new website, help.fscj.edu

Our broadcast started with a general overview of how to use the site and provided a closer look at some of its improved features. The Educational Technology team explained how to fill out a help ticket, how to request new technology, and how to easily reset your password without having to contact the help desk. WE clarified when to use the "Request a Service" feature and when to use "Get Help", and shared some available resources for new faculty and staff.

In Focus LIVE: Open Educational Resources

Watch the latest episode of In Focus Live, shot on Wednesday, November 9 at 1 PM. It spotlights the development and use of Open Educational Resources (OERs) at FSCJ.

Open Educational Resources are free materials (books, media, and lessons) that can be used for teaching and research. During the live show, guests Shannon Dew, Director of Online Library Services, and Dr. Peter Shapiro, Director of Creative Learning Services, explained how to access OERs for a variety of purposes and provided an overview of an new degree pathway that relies exclusively on OERs as course material.
